Art Basel ‘halo effect’ fuels economic boon for Miami

Art Basel Miami Beach arrives every year with a promise of profit, luxury and excess. Business owners and executives tell the Business Journal that the exclusive fair’s 14th annual edition for the Americas will not disappoint.

At its core, the highly anticipated event is a tribute to Miami-Dade County’s booming cultural scene, and its mammoth success and economic over spill is evidence that the world likes what it sees.

The satellite fairs are not to be discounted as second rate, says local lawyer and avid art collector Alan Kluger. The founding member of Kluger, Kaplan, Silverman, Katzen & Levine P.L. wouldn’t offer an estimate of his art collection, but says he buys an average of 10 pieces of art a year.

The pieces range from “really inexpensive to a mortgage,” he said. He bought a piece of Israeli contemporary art, a Scottish sculpture and a Latin American contemporary work from artists showing at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach.

“Five years ago, Art Miami was clearly a secondary sub fair,” he said. “Now, in some respects, it’s as good as [Art Basel].”
